Heraklion, Crete, Greece – March 18, 2026

The Natural History Museum of Crete in Heraklion will host a landmark event organized by the Greek Demo Hub, a collaborative initiative led by the University of Crete, the Mediterranean Institute for Nature and Anthropos (MedINA), and Harokopio University of Athens. The workshop will focus on fostering sustainable and resilient social-ecological systems for the Greek islands.

The event aims to unite island communities, policymakers, researchers, and practitioners in a collective effort to address critical issues such as biodiversity conservation, cultural heritage preservation, and ecosystem services. A local NGO will present its ongoing projects, shedding light on the urgent challenges posed by climate change and biodiversity loss. Through interactive breakout discussions and participatory sessions, attendees will explore local research and innovation needs, collaboration barriers, and opportunities for joint action. The ultimate goal is to chart practical pathways toward more sustainable and inclusive futures for small and medium-sized Greek islands, emphasising capacity-building, participatory governance, and cross-sector collaboration.

Kalkara, Malta – March 20, 2026

Just two days later, Malta will host its own national conference at Villa Bighi in Kalkara, organised by the Malta Demo Hub - Ecostack Innovations and the University of Malta, with support from the Government of Malta and Xjenza Malta. The conference will gather policymakers, regulators, business leaders, academics, and civil society representatives to discuss aligning economic growth and strategic investment with environmental responsibility and long-term resilience.

The focus will be on the interconnectedness of climate, nature, health, and the economy, and how improved coordination and early risk assessment can enhance decision-making. Through panel discussions, audience participation, and networking sessions, the event seeks to move beyond dialogue to foster practical collaboration. The aim is to support smarter decisions today that will bolster Malta’s competitiveness, resilience, and liveability in the coming years.

Both events underscore a regional commitment to sustainable development, highlighting the importance of collaboration and innovation in addressing the unique challenges faced by island communities.
